Jo Ann’s Gems: Unsolicited Advice #13

The world is made up of people who need warning labels on peanut butter stating the product contains peanuts.  Remember this anytime you’re feeling down on yourself.

Before anyone starts jumping on me about food allergies, I would like to say food allergies are scary.  My son goes into anaphylaxis when he eats certain foods.  It’s life and death.  Terrifying to him and everyone around him.  It means a shot from his EPI-pen and a trip to the ER.  Serious stuff.

Food allergies are not a joke.

I am not suggesting that there shouldn’t be warning labels.  There should be.  I don’t expect, when buying jelly, that it may contain shrimp.  If it’s made in a factory where shrimp is processed, it needs to be noted.  The same goes for orange juice.  If it contains peanuts, it should be noted.  No one expects peanuts to be in orange juice.  Warning labels save lives.

However, if I’m buying clam juice, I shouldn’t need a label warning me that it contains clams.  I assume it contains clams.  If it doesn’t, I expect there to be a explanation.  The same goes for peanut butter.

Warning Label on peanut butter.

I’m sorry for the fuzzy picture. I took it a couple of years ago at the supermarket. I hate peanut butter and don’t keep it in the house.

Perhaps I should add this:  Whenever you’re feeling down on yourself, remember that there are people who need this warning:
