I just finished reading your short story about a weekend with your grandmother. It was a most enjoyable read, but marred slightly by the apparent confusion of “discreet” and “discrete,” two similar words with quite different meanings. I would suggest having a good editor read before publication, but on second look this appears to be one of the rare uses where the meanings coincide to a degree. Discreet means “careful” and “circumspect,” while discrete means “separate” and “immaterial.” Your grandfather’s visits appear to have been both.

Thank you for reading my story, and for picking up the spelling error. I try to be careful when proofreading my work, but sometimes miss things. I find it interesting that both words derive from the Latin ‘discretus’, meaning ‘separate’. The meaning of the word ‘discreet’evolved over time.
